Driving in Wyoming

Western Wyoming offers dramatic driving beneath the Teton and Absaroka ranges, with routes connecting Jackson, Yellowstone National Park, Cody, and the state's high mountain country. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway follows Wyoming Highway 296 through the Absarokas, while nearby approaches to the Beartooth Highway climb toward some of the region's highest paved terrain. Farther east, U.S. 14 and U.S. 14A cross the Bighorn Mountains with sustained grades, forested plateaus, and expansive viewpoints. In southern Wyoming, the Snowy Range Scenic Byway on Wyoming Highway 130 crosses alpine terrain west of Laramie, and Wyoming Highway 70 traverses the Continental Divide at Battle Pass. Between the ranges, long highways cross sagebrush basins, ranch country, and open high plains, giving Wyoming's driving routes an unusually strong contrast between tight mountain sections and broad, remote landscapes.
