Driving in Wisconsin

Southwestern Wisconsin offers the state’s most pronounced elevation changes, with the unglaciated Driftless Area cut into ridges, coulees and narrow valleys. WIS 35, the Great River Road, follows the Mississippi corridor past wooded bluffs and river towns, while WIS 60 traces the Lower Wisconsin River toward Prairie du Chien. In the southeast, the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive crosses rolling terrain shaped by glacial deposits. Farther north, WIS 13 on the Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway combines forest, shoreline views and small harbor communities, while the Door County Coastal Byway follows WIS 42 and WIS 57 around the northern Door Peninsula. Wisconsin also maintains an extensive Rustic Roads network of lightly traveled local routes; individual roads may be paved, gravel or dirt. These smaller roads add variety but can be narrower and less intensively maintained than state highways.
