Driving in Washington

The Cascade Range creates Washington’s strongest contrast in driving environments, separating the wetter Puget Sound side from the drier interior. State Route 20 crosses the North Cascades through steep alpine terrain and high passes, while US 2 over Stevens Pass provides another major mountain crossing. Around Mount Rainier, State Route 410 over Chinook Pass offers close views of volcanic and subalpine landscapes when seasonally open. West of Puget Sound, US 101 traces much of the Olympic Peninsula, linking coastal sections, dense forest, river valleys, and approaches to Olympic National Park. Farther south, State Route 14 follows the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge beneath cliffs and wooded slopes. Eastern Washington changes character again, with broad agricultural roads through the Palouse, coulees, basalt country, and the Columbia Basin. Together, these regions give Washington an unusually broad mix of mountain crossings, coastal drives, forest roads, and open rural routes.
