Driving in Vermont

The Green Mountains form the backbone of Vermont and shape many of its most interesting driving routes, with roads climbing through forested gaps before descending into compact villages and river valleys. Vermont Route 100 is the state’s best-known north–south scenic corridor, following the mountains through a succession of rural communities, while Route 108 through Smugglers’ Notch provides a much tighter mountain-road experience when open. Other designated byways explore the Mad River Valley, Lake Champlain countryside, southern Green Mountains, Connecticut River valley, and the more remote hills and lakes of the Northeast Kingdom. Away from the principal highways, Vermont has numerous narrow town roads, including many unpaved sections, where surfaces and maintenance standards can vary. The state’s relatively short distances make it practical to combine mountain roads, agricultural valleys, forest corridors, and small-town streets within a single driving route.
