Driving in Utah

Utah's driving landscape changes sharply between the mountainous north and the canyon country of the south and east. Around the Wasatch Range, roads climb narrow canyons and forested slopes, with routes such as the Alpine Loop and Guardsman Pass providing more technical, elevation-changing drives. Farther east, Mirror Lake Highway crosses the high Uinta Mountains through conifer forest and alpine terrain. Southern Utah is defined by the Colorado Plateau, where Scenic Byway 12 runs through areas of sandstone cliffs, high plateaus, and open desert between Panguitch and Torrey. Other notable corridors include SR-128 beside the Colorado River near Moab and roads through the varied landscapes around Capitol Reef, Cedar Breaks, and Grand Staircase-Escalante. The state's combination of paved mountain byways, canyon highways, and remote desert roads makes conditions and driving character vary considerably over relatively short distances.
