Driving in South Carolina

The strongest concentration of curving driving roads is in the Upstate, where the Blue Ridge Escarpment rises sharply above the Piedmont. SC 11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, runs beneath this mountain front near Table Rock and the Jocassee Gorges, while US 276 climbs toward Caesars Head and the North Carolina line through steeper, more tightly winding terrain. Western South Carolina also offers quieter rural routes around the Savannah River and large reservoirs, including sections of the Savannah River Scenic Byway. Farther southeast, the landscape becomes progressively flatter, with long roads through farmland, pine forest, wetlands, and historic settlements. Near Charleston, Ashley River Road provides a notably different scenic drive through a historic Lowcountry corridor, while roads toward the Sea Islands cross marshes and coastal plains. The state's variety makes it possible to combine mountain roads, countryside drives, and coastal routes without crossing great distances.
