Driving in Oregon

Oregon’s driving roads reflect the sharp geographic contrasts between the coast, Cascade Range, Columbia River Gorge, and the drier interior. US 101 follows much of the Pacific coast through headlands, forests, small towns, and exposed ocean viewpoints, while the Historic Columbia River Highway explores sections of the Gorge on a narrower, more winding alignment than Interstate 84. In the Cascades, routes such as McKenzie Pass on Oregon Route 242 and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway climb into volcanic terrain, passing lava fields, alpine lakes, and high forest. Around Mount Hood and farther south toward Crater Lake, mountain highways add long climbs, sweeping bends, and winter-weather exposure. Eastern Oregon changes character again, with broad high-desert basins, canyon country, and sparsely populated roads around the Blue Mountains, Wallowa Mountains, and Hells Canyon. Oregon also maintains an extensive network of officially designated scenic byways and tour routes covering many of these landscapes.
