Driving in Ohio

Southeastern Ohio provides the state’s strongest concentration of winding driving roads, with the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau creating repeated climbs, descents, tight valleys, and forested ridgelines. State Route 555, commonly known as the Triple Nickel, is a notable example of the region’s rural, continuously changing alignment between the Little Hocking area and the Zanesville vicinity. Around Hocking Hills, the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway links sandstone cliffs, wooded ravines, and the separate units of Hocking Hills State Park. Farther south and east, the Ohio River Scenic Byway follows the river corridor through Appalachian counties, using roads including US 52 and State Route 7 and passing sections of Wayne National Forest. Northern and western Ohio are generally flatter, but the Lake Erie coast, glacial landscapes, river valleys, and agricultural back roads offer a different style of scenic driving with longer sightlines and gentler curves.
