Driving in New York

The strongest concentration of mountain roads is in upstate New York. In the Adirondacks, routes such as NY 73 through the High Peaks pass lakes, forested valleys, steep-sided mountain scenery, and trailheads, while other designated byways cross quieter parts of Adirondack Park. The Catskills offer narrower valleys, wooded ridges, reservoirs, and winding roads including the Route 28 corridor and Mountain Cloves area. Farther south, the Taconic State Parkway follows a hilly, landscaped route through the eastern Hudson Valley with views toward the Hudson Highlands, Catskills, and Taconic ranges. The Upper Delaware, Finger Lakes, and Great Lakes regions add river roads, vineyard country, lake shores, and open rural driving. New York's parkways are generally intended for passenger vehicles; commercial vehicles are prohibited on the state parkway system, and drivers should follow posted vehicle and clearance restrictions.
