Driving in Nevada

Much of Nevada lies within the Basin and Range Province, where repeated mountain chains rise sharply above broad, sparsely settled valleys. This geography creates long, open highways punctuated by substantial climbs, sweeping descents, and remote passes. U.S. 50 across central Nevada is a classic example of the state’s expansive Great Basin driving environment, while the northwest offers a very different character around Lake Tahoe. State Route 431, the Mount Rose Highway, climbs through forest and high mountain terrain between the Reno area and the Tahoe Basin, and State Route 28 follows part of Tahoe’s Nevada shoreline. Eastern Nevada adds higher, more isolated mountain scenery, including the paved Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive in Great Basin National Park. In the south, roads around Valley of Fire and the Mojave Desert replace alpine forests with sandstone formations, dry washes, rugged desert ridges, and wide-open views.
