Driving Roads in Nebraska

The Nebraska Sandhills define much of the state's distinctive driving landscape, with paved highways rising and falling across immense grass-stabilized dunes, ranch country, and river valleys. Nebraska Highway 2 carries the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway between Grand Island and Alliance, while the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway explores quieter country along Highways 11 and 91. Farther north, U.S. 20 crosses the Sandhills toward the Pine Ridge and the buttes of the western Panhandle on the Bridges to Buttes Scenic Byway. U.S. 385 adds rolling prairie, wooded ridges, and western terrain around Chadron, while U.S. 26 and Highway 92 pass landmarks such as Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff. In eastern Nebraska, routes near the Missouri River encounter more wooded bluffs, farmland, and historic communities. Most scenic driving is on conventional two-lane highways with long sightlines, gradual curves, and substantial distances between towns.
