Driving in Mississippi

The Natchez Trace Parkway is Mississippi's defining scenic driving route, running from Natchez through central Mississippi toward Tupelo and the northeastern hills. Its controlled-access character, wooded surroundings, historic sites, cypress swamps, and absence of commercial traffic create a distinctly different driving environment from ordinary highways; commercial vehicles are prohibited and temporary construction detours can affect individual sections. Western Mississippi offers another landscape along the Great River Road, where routes cross the broad, level Mississippi Delta and connect river towns, farmland, levee country, and historic sites. In the northeast, roads around the Mississippi Hills and Tishomingo area become more rolling and wooded, with rocky terrain uncommon elsewhere in the state. Farther south, pine forests give way to the Gulf Coast, where U.S. Route 90 links coastal communities with frequent views toward Mississippi Sound. Across the state, the appeal is generally measured scenery and regional variety rather than steep gradients or alpine-style switchbacks.
