Driving in Minnesota

Minnesota’s most distinctive scenic driving is concentrated around its lakes, forests, and deeply cut river valleys rather than high mountains. Along Lake Superior, the North Shore All-American Scenic Drive follows the rugged shoreline through wooded terrain, rocky headlands, and frequent elevation changes. Inland, routes such as the Gunflint Trail and Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway cross the lake-dotted forests of northeastern and north-central Minnesota, while the Superior National Forest provides a network of quieter connecting roads. In southeastern Minnesota, Historic Bluff Country and stretches of the Great River Road run through the Driftless Area, where winding roads climb and descend wooded bluffs above the Mississippi and smaller river valleys. Western and southern routes are generally more open, crossing prairie, agricultural land, and broad glacial landscapes. Minnesota’s extensive scenic-byway network makes it easy to combine major paved routes with lower-traffic county and forest roads where public access permits.
