Driving Roads in Georgia

North Georgia provides the state’s strongest concentration of mountain driving roads, particularly across the Blue Ridge, Cohutta Mountains, and the Chattahoochee National Forest. The Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway uses State Routes 348, 180, and 17/75 around Brasstown Bald, combining sustained climbs, wooded curves, gaps, and overlooks. State Route 60 through the Suches area and nearby State Route 180 add narrow, winding connections through high valleys and Appalachian terrain. Farther west, the Ridge and Valley and Cohutta-Chattahoochee scenic byways mix mountain slopes, agricultural valleys, rural county roads, and sections near Fort Mountain. Central Georgia offers gentler driving through the Piedmont, with rolling farmland, forests, and historic communities, while routes closer to the Atlantic coast become flatter and more open. The Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway illustrates that contrast with tidal marshes, live oaks, waterways, and low-country scenery along US 17 and State Route 99.
