Driving in Florida

Florida offers an unusually varied driving environment for a predominantly low-lying state. The Florida Keys Scenic Highway follows the Overseas Highway through a chain of islands linked by long bridges, while Atlantic routes such as A1A combine barrier islands, beaches, tidal waterways and stretches of coastal woodland. Around Ormond Beach, the Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail adds narrow, tree-canopied roads through maritime forest, creeks and marshland. Inland, the central peninsula provides a different character: the Green Mountain Scenic Byway and Ridge Scenic Highway cross rolling lake country and some of Florida’s more pronounced elevation changes. Farther south, US 41 and roads in and around Big Cypress introduce broad wetland and cypress landscapes, while northern Florida and the Panhandle feature pine forest, rivers and quieter rural highways. Florida’s extensive Scenic Highways network makes these contrasting regions useful starting points for finding scenic driving routes beyond the state’s major interstates.
