Driving in California

California combines unusually varied geography with an extensive network of paved scenic and mountain roads. Highway 1 follows long sections of the Pacific coast, including the rugged Big Sur region, where steep coastal terrain can also make the route vulnerable to landslides, wildfire closures, and roadworks. Inland, the Sierra Nevada provides high-elevation driving routes such as Tioga Road through Yosemite, Sonora Pass, Ebbetts Pass, and Monitor Pass, linking forested western slopes with the drier landscapes around the Eastern Sierra and US 395. Farther south, roads cross the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and Santa Monica mountains before reaching Mojave and Colorado Desert environments. Road character ranges from broad highways through open desert to narrow, winding mountain sections with limited shoulders. National parks, wildfire zones, winter weather, construction, and storm damage can all affect access, so current road conditions should be checked before committing to remote or high-elevation routes.
