Driving in Arkansas

Northern and western Arkansas contain many of the state’s most distinctive driving roads, with paved highways climbing through the Ozark Mountains, Boston Mountains, and Ouachita Mountains. Arkansas Scenic 7 crosses much of the state and becomes particularly winding around the Ozarks, while Highway 23’s Pig Trail Scenic Byway follows steep, wooded terrain in the Ozark National Forest. Farther south, the Talimena Scenic Drive follows high Ouachita ridges from Mena toward Oklahoma, and Highway 309 climbs Mount Magazine above the Arkansas River Valley. These routes mix tight bends, longer ridge sections, overlooks, forests, and river crossings rather than sustained high-altitude mountain passes. Eastern Arkansas is markedly different: Crowley’s Ridge Parkway and the Great River Road introduce elevated woodland, Mississippi Delta farmland, wetlands, and long, flatter sections. Numerous National Forest roads add further variety, although surface quality and vehicle-access rules vary.
