Driving in Alaska

Southcentral Alaska contains many of the state’s most accessible scenic driving routes. The Seward Highway follows Turnagain Arm beneath the Chugach Mountains, while the Glenn and Richardson highways pass glacier valleys, broad river corridors, and mountain terrain; the Richardson also crosses snowy Thompson Pass on its route between Valdez and the Interior. Farther inland, the partly gravel Denali Highway runs between the Parks and Richardson highways with expansive views toward the Alaska Range. For a much more remote driving environment, the Dalton Highway continues north from the Interior, crossing the Yukon River, Brooks Range, Atigun Pass, and Arctic tundra on its way to Deadhorse. Road surfaces and services vary substantially outside the main population centers, and some routes include extensive gravel sections, long distances between fuel stops, heavy commercial traffic, or limited mobile coverage.
