Driving in Alabama

Northeastern Alabama provides the state’s strongest concentration of winding scenic roads, particularly around the southern Appalachians, Lookout Mountain, and the Talladega National Forest. Alabama Highway 281, known in this area as the Talladega Scenic Drive, follows high forested ridges near Cheaha State Park and Alabama’s highest point. Farther north, the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway on Alabama Highway 176 traces the western rim of Little River Canyon, with frequent curves, steep grades, narrow sections, and overlooks; large RVs and trailers are not recommended on parts of this route. The Bankhead National Forest in northwestern Alabama adds quieter forest and backroad driving, while central and southern Alabama transition toward gentler hills, pine country, agricultural landscapes, and the coastal plain. Some national-forest roads are unpaved or subject to temporary access restrictions, so route-specific conditions should be checked before leaving paved highways.
