What makes this road special

Skyline Drive is a 105-mile scenic road running along the crest of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains through Shenandoah National Park. The route connects Front Royal in the north with Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro in the south, where it meets the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Following the mountain ridge for roughly 169 km, Skyline Drive combines long sequences of sweeping bends with forested sections and frequent overlooks across the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia Piedmont. It is the only public road through Shenandoah National Park and provides access to many of the park's viewpoints, trails and visitor areas.

Before you drive

Allow around three hours to drive the full length of Skyline Drive without substantial stops, and considerably longer if you plan to visit overlooks or trailheads. Shenandoah National Park charges an entrance fee to access the road. Skyline Drive is generally open year-round, but sections or the entire road can close temporarily because of snow, ice or other severe weather. Wildlife frequently crosses the road, so be prepared to slow or stop, particularly around dawn and dusk.
