What makes this road special

The Transfăgărășan is Romania's famous DN7C mountain road across the Făgăraș Mountains, linking the Argeș Valley with Transylvania. The route climbs past Lake Vidraru into increasingly dramatic alpine terrain before reaching its highest point at around 2,040 metres near the Capra–Bâlea tunnel and Bâlea Lake. On the northern side, a dense sequence of switchbacks descends toward Cârțișoara, while the southern approach combines forested sections, mountain valleys and long stretches alongside Lake Vidraru. The scale and variety of the route make the Transfăgărășan much more than its famous hairpin section.

Driving this road

The Transfăgărășan changes character substantially from one side of the mountains to the other. The southern approach is a long, varied climb through forest and alongside Lake Vidraru before becoming increasingly exposed at higher elevations. Beyond the Capra–Bâlea tunnel, the northern side delivers the road's most recognizable section: tightly stacked switchbacks descending from the Bâlea area into the valley below. Blind bends, sustained gradients and frequent changes in elevation keep the route engaging, while tourist traffic around Bâlea Lake can considerably slow the pace during busy periods.

Before you drive

The high-alpine section of the Transfăgărășan is seasonal and cannot be relied upon as a through-route during winter. The section between Piscu Negru and Bâlea Cascadă closes according to weather and mountain conditions, with reopening dates varying from year to year. Even when the road is open, restrictions can be introduced because of fog, storms, rockfall or other mountain hazards. Check the current DN7C road status before travelling and expect substantially heavier traffic around Bâlea Lake during peak summer periods.
