What makes this road special

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic mountain road through the Appalachian Highlands of North Carolina and Virginia. This Roudz route follows roughly 348 km of the Parkway from the Lowgap area in North Carolina north to Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro, where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive area of Shenandoah National Park. Along the way, the road follows forested ridges through long flowing bends, repeated elevation changes and numerous mountain viewpoints, making this section particularly suited to relaxed scenic driving.

Driving this road

This section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is defined by flowing corners and sustained mountain driving rather than tight hairpins or extreme gradients. Long sequences of bends follow the contours of the Blue Ridge, alternating between wooded sections, exposed ridges and open viewpoints. The Parkway's maximum speed limit is 45 mph (72 km/h), and frequent overlooks encourage a relaxed pace rather than fast point-to-point driving. Over such a long route, the character changes considerably, making the journey itself more important than any single sequence of corners.

Before you drive

Allow considerably more time than the distance alone suggests, especially if you plan to stop at overlooks. The National Park Service estimates that 30 miles of Parkway driving typically takes about an hour, and there are no gas stations directly on the Parkway, although fuel is available near many access points. Sections can close temporarily because of winter weather, maintenance, construction or other conditions, so check the current National Park Service road status before travelling. Traffic is typically busiest during summer and October, particularly on weekends and holidays.
