The main route gains elevation through a broad, well-engineered series of sweeping bends before reaching the Taikanzan area, where viewpoints overlook Lake Ashi and, in clear conditions, Mount Fuji. Unlike many narrow Japanese mountain roads, the Turnpike was designed with generous road width and relatively open curves, giving it a distinctive fast-flowing character while providing a direct route from the Odawara area into Hakone.
